Took me forever but I finally framed this David Lance Goines print. When Goines passed away this spring, I bought three of his poster designs for Chez Panisse. This one is the oldest of the three—i think it is from 1987. The design feels very 80s to me, and the rose motif reminds me of Peter Saville’s design for the New Order album, Power, Corruption, and Lies (1982).
One summer, I worked nights at a record shop on Telegraph Avenue. And for almost three years, I lived up the hill from Chez Panisse. When I look at this poster, I think of those times — somehow, it feels appropriate, now that I am much older and live on the far side of the continent, to bring these touchstones of my college years together. It is bittersweet, yes, and it keeps me in touch with who I was.
